Nearly 300 teachers across Scotland have taken part in Climate Smarter and Carbon Capture CPD training sessions this year giving them the skills and resources to deliver our award winning STEM activities. Delivered through 29 in-person and six online sessions, this hands-on training is designed to help teachers bring the latest knowledge in sustainable technology and environmental science into their classroom. The training provided teachers with a chance to unbox kits and gain confidence in the activities.
The Climate Smarter project is supported by Confor, Crown Estate Scotland, HCI Skills Gateway, Kilgallioch Community fund, Par Forestry and Aviva Investors, RHASS, Scottish Forestry Trust, Scottish Power, Shell and TotalEnergies. 190 primary and secondary schools will investigate how we can tackle the climate emergency through practical activities on renewable energy, water, forestry and smart technologies.
The Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, funded by Shell UK Ltd, will be delivered to over 1,000 young people across 30 new schools in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and Fife this year. Using over 20 experiments, teachers guide students on carbon dioxide sources, capture, transport, and storage, helping them to build a model storage facility and explore CCS’s role in the global energy mix.
Teacher feedback on the training sessions has been overwhelmingly positive. A teacher from Aberdeen noted: “Thomas was great at going through each lesson and experiment, very valuable. We need more hands-on CPD like this!” Another from Aberdeenshire added, “This was an excellent CPD! So well explained and resourced. Can’t wait to introduce the children to this!” “Really valuable session with a step-by-step guide and full kit provided—just what I need!” shared one teacher from Fife.
With enthusiastic support from teachers and partners, our STEM outreach projects are poised to continue to spark young people’s interest in tackling climate challenges and developing skills essential for Scotland’s future STEM workforce.
