The challenge is designed to engage Secondary 2 pupils (ages 12–14) with the principles of renewable energy and sustainable transport through a fast-paced, hands-on adventure. In free in-school workshops, teams use LEGO components and a miniature hydrogen fuel cell to design, build, and race their own vehicles—testing, refining, and competing to create the most energy-efficient design. Each workshop culminates in the excitement of race day, where pupils battle it out to see whose car goes the furthest, with winning teams invited to the Regional Finals to compete for the title of Scottish Hydrogen Challenge Champions.
In the 2025/26 academic year, the Aberdeen Schools’ Hydrogen Challenge will return, bringing free workshops to S2 pupils in all secondary schools across the Aberdeen City region. This programme is made possible thanks to the support of our partner organisations.
